Last Saturday, the Banger Colts participated in the inaugural Royal Bangkok Sports Club Seven-a-Side tournament. On a day when the sun shone, the crowds turned up and the rugby was of the highest quality. The Royal Bangkok Sports Club setup was frst class with teams having their own tent nestled conveniently on the sideline
The warm weather and the soft ground encouraged the players to commit themselves to rugby. Not that anyone needed much encouragement to participate. The day passed quickly and seamlessly from one match to the other in the company of friends enjoying cold Singha and Carlsberg in the sunshine. It does not get better than this.
The Bangers lost their opening game against the Thai Air Force however, won their second pool game against the Thai Army. The last game of the day for a spot in the Bowl playoff saw the Bangers exit the tournament beaten by Ramkhamhaeng University. The players and coaches, Andy Raming and Keith Coljohn were understandably disappointed to be knocked out, with harsh referee calls turning the course of the game against the Bangers.
The Colts were competitive all day, beefed up with a brace of newly recruited young players who all knew a thing or two about playing sevens rugby.
Post game, the Bangers were invited to the VIP rooftop and enjoyed complimentary hospitality from the tournament sponsors. As the sun set over the magnificent RBSC grounds, the Bangers indulged in the cold beer and tasty finger food. Just a magic setting. The RBSC must be congratulated for the excellent tournament. They excelled themselves.
Mid evening, the Banger returned to their Tenderlion clubhouse to watch th England - Australia game. The party continued, The Bangers enjoying what was left of the night. It would have been a late night early morning for some.
