Bangkok Bangers TRU Championship 7s
12th and 13th August 2017
The mighty Bangers set off for yet another silverware hunt on the 12th of August to attend the TRU rugby 7s championship at the Kings Collage which was far away.
Upon arrival, we received our group and game times which we were set to face the Southerners, Bangkok warriors and The royal Thai air force.
First game was scheduled for 12.30pm which was against the Southerners and then we were informed they had not turned up (Thanks Southerners) so automatically the Bangers received their first win of 21 – 0, Which is always a good start of the day.
Well as we did not get to get on the field, Captain Darryn Mathee decided to convince the Bangkok Warriors to play their Sunday fixture on the Saturday so the Bangers would still get a chance to play 2 games on one day. Game started very messy with a lot of mistakes and both teams not performing at their best. But the Bangers came up victorious 17 – 0 with tries from Darryn Mathee, Henry Van Zyl (on debut) and Francois Botha (on debut) and 1 conversion from Darryn. A messy victory but a win is a win.
After a short 4 hour wait it was time to take on the Airforce which we always knew would be a tough game. Bangers started much better than the first with some big hits and awesome defense by every player and but the Air force decided to take on a forward on the wing and go round to score under the polls. But the Bangers did not give up with Darryn Mathee picking up a loose ball and running into score the Bangers opening try and converting it. 2 min later Darryn scored again and converted to end the game with another Bangers victory 14 – 7. This resulting in the Bangers topping the group with 3 form 3 wins..
Day 2 begun in true Bangers style all looking fresh after after a good night out and ready to take on the Chula boys in the quarterfinals but surprise surprise when we arrived we were informed we were playing the Thai Navy which is always a tough one as they are a very well drilled 7s team. Game began with Bangers giving it their all but the Navy slipped in 2 easy tries and going down 12 – 0 with only 2 minutes to go. Eventually the Bangers got some ball and were showing some class by Laurens Notenboom going over the white line to score the first points for the Bangers. With only the kick left Bangers were down 12 – 5 and need to secure the ball to score but the navy received the ball and booted it out to end the game knocking the Bangers out.
Great effort to all the Bangers and to the support that showed up. Keep our heads up and keep moving forward and lets continue to build the Bangers family.
