Belles Tournament Report
The first day went off with a bang for the Belles with the girls winning all 3 games. We began our campaign for a trophy with a 36-0 win over the Saigon Geckos, who are usually a challenging competitor. Big numbers helped us through the day and there was never a moment when the team looked tired. An excellent day of rugby which set us up with a glimpse of a Sunday afternoon final competing for the Cup.
Proudly the Belles carried on their strong form from the pitch to the dance floor to sing along with one of our very own, Tasty AKA Jess Melton, who joined the Rugby Band for the evening entertainment.
The first game on Sunday morning ended up with a loss to the quick and skilled Vientiane Lions. Next up, a game we had come to this tournament to win: The Southerners. With memories of last year’s win on Saturday afternoon in front of a big crowd on pitch 1, the Belles had everything to loose. A loss would also see us miss out on a place in the Cup final.
Tired legs dug deep and the girls put in tackle after tackle, ran with the ball and turned over the Southerners ball (check out the kick-ass counter rucking in the photo!). A kick and chase put Eva in space for her first try for the Belles, and some clever play by our top class Thai players ensured that the Belles left the pitch victorious and in the Cup final. Final score 19-0
The skilled and quick Laos players proved too strong in the final, and although the Belles pushed on with their defence and closed some Laos opportunities, the fast legs of the national side were too much for the Belles.
In the award ceremony the Belles were also announced as the women’s Social team of the tournament for the third year running, adding another trophy to their runner’s-up cup. To beat old rivals so convincingly and to place the highest social team of the tournament shows us how far we have come, how hard we have trained and our commitment as a team to go out and win.
It has been with the upmost pride that we carried not one, but two trophies home and we can’t wait to see where the Belles can go next. Huge thanks to our coach, Doug, and all of the supporters who cheered us on over the weekend. Preparation for next year starts NOW!
Day 1 results:
Saigon Geckos 36-0
KL Tigers 19-7
BIT Barbarians 26-0
Old Boys Tournament Report
The Bangers Old Boys certainly supported the ideals of Rugby both on and off the pitch at this year’s marvellous edition of the BK 10s. Off the field, the Old Boys could be found supporting the bars and food stalls with amazing stamina and dedication. It should also be mentioned that many of our wonderful Bangers on Bikes team who once again raised an amazing amount of money for local charities including Nak Suu enjoyed one days rest before hitting the pitches for the Old Boys and even Ancients! On the field, we supported the tournament wholeheartedly with our players helping with many other teams from the Soi Dogs, FABs and Blues Brothers which is a true reflection of our rugby values. Fun, Friendship and Fraternity were certainly at the forefront of our tournament plans. As Old Boys the memories of results are a bit hazy but we finished the pool stage with 2 wins and 2 losses before making a something final where we lost players to injury and struggled to keep 10 men on the field before succumbing to a runners up spot. Rugby was the winner and we certainly enjoyed supporting the Colts who played some great rugby during the weekend, our ever-improving Belles who did a great job to get to the main final, and our fearless Ancients who are after all our future....
Until next time.
